Ten Boreholes Planned for Cotton-Growing Communities in Kara

(Togo First) - Togo's national cotton company, Nouvelle Société Cotonnière du Togo (NSCT), signed an agreement on Tuesday in Kara with the Regional Council of Kara to support access to safe drinking water in cotton-producing communities.

Under the agreement, NSCT will fund the construction of ten boreholes across the region.

The program will run over three years, with three boreholes planned for 2026, three more in 2027 and four in 2028. Sites were selected in consultation with local authorities based on vulnerability assessments and community-identified needs.

The Regional Council will oversee overall coordination of the project, while a multi-stakeholder steering committee comprising representatives from the water, agriculture and cotton sectors will monitor implementation.

The initiative comes as Togo's cotton sector shows signs of recovery after several challenging production seasons. The 2025-2026 campaign recorded output of 79,000 tonnes of seed cotton, up from just over 60,000 tonnes the previous season.

NSCT has said it aims to expand planted areas to more than 100,000 hectares as early as next season, with a medium-term target of 150,000 tonnes of seed cotton by 2030.
