Minister of foreign affairs officially launches Diaspora Window

(Togo First) - Yesterday, May 10th, the Diaspora Window was officially launched. “Together with the Diplomatic Corps, technical and financial partners and compatriots of the Diaspora, I have launched the ‘Diaspora Window’ to help Togolese in the Diaspora to return, invest or facilitate foreign investment in the Togo 2025 plan,” said Robert Dussey, the minister of foreign affairs, regional integration and Togolese abroad.

The creation of this window directly aligns with the government’s ambition to involve the diaspora in the country’s development, an ambition written in its 2020-2025 roadmap, as the authorities believe that “no nation can build itself and thrive without involving all its daughters and sons in public affairs.”

With the new window, Lomé intends to better leverage its diaspora; this is in a context where most of the funds sent home by the latter go only to their family. Indeed, every year, members of the Togolese diaspora send home nearly $500 million, which equals 8-9% of the GDP. In 2020 however, the remittances were negatively affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
