Togo distributes nearly 400,000 seedlings to support coffee and cocoa sector revival

(Togo First) - Togo's coffee and cocoa coordination committee launched the 2026 national seedling distribution campaign on June 1 in Akata, in Kpélé prefecture.

The Coffee and Cocoa Sector Coordination Committee (CCFCC) distributed 398,240 seedlings to producer organizations and individual farmers, including 177,200 cocoa seedlings, 106,540 coffee seedlings and 114,500 agroforestry seedlings.

Coffee and Cocoa Development Plan

The operation forms part of the Coffee and Cocoa Development Plan (PDCC), which aims to modernize plantations, improve productivity and strengthen farmers' resilience to climate change. The seedlings are also intended to support the government's zero-deforestation strategy, adopted in collaboration with stakeholders across the sector.

According to the CCFCC, nearly 940,000 seedlings have been distributed since 2021, helping renew around 705 hectares of plantations. The initiative comes as the government seeks to revitalize the coffee and cocoa industries, long considered pillars of Togo's agricultural economy.

Export performance

Recent efforts are beginning to translate into stronger export results. During the 2024-2025 campaign, exports reached 4,400 tonnes of coffee and 24,000 tonnes of cocoa, compared with 2,618 tonnes and 11,182 tonnes respectively in the previous campaign. The increase reflects the implementation of sector development plans adopted in 2024.

Coffee and cocoa account for about 1.2% of Togo's gross domestic product, according to the latest available data, and provide livelihoods for approximately 32,000 farmers.

Several recent initiatives are aimed at improving the sector's competitiveness, including the opening of premium cocoa centers in Kessibo-Abrewankor, in Wawa prefecture, and in Mpoti, in Blitta 3 municipality, the launch of a Coffee House in Lomé, and a range of programs supporting production and processing.
