Togo reviews AfCFTA implementation to strengthen its foothold in African markets

(Togo First) - Government officials, business representatives and experts met in Aného from Tuesday to Friday to review Togo's implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and assess progress since the pact entered into force.

The workshop, organised by the Ministry Delegate for Trade and Quality Control, aims to identify achievements, persistent challenges and measures needed to strengthen the country's integration into the continental market.

Participants are discussing trade facilitation, market access, the development of regional value chains and support mechanisms for businesses. Particular attention is being paid to small and medium-sized enterprises, which are expected to play a key role in benefiting from opportunities under the AfCFTA.

At the opening session, Koffi Vinyo Mensah, chief of staff to the minister delegate for Trade and Quality Control, reaffirmed the government's commitment to aligning the country's legal, regulatory and institutional framework with the requirements of the continental agreement.

The review comes several weeks after the Biashara Afrika 2026 forum in Lomé, where Togolese authorities announced a 30-day visa exemption for African nationals holding official passports, a measure aimed at boosting mobility and economic integration.

Recommendations expected at the end of the workshop are intended to help shape measures to improve the competitiveness of Togolese businesses and increase their participation in intra-African trade, which remains limited despite the continent's market potential.
