Togo appoints Ilagou Ayeva to lead state power utility amid reforms

(Togo First) - Togo's state electricity distributor CEET appointed Ilagou Ayeva as its new director general on Wednesday, replacing Débo-K'mba Barandao, who had held the post since March 2022.

Ayeva takes charge of the CEET at a time of recurring disruptions to the country's power supply. He is expected to continue reforms already under way in the sector.

For several months, CEET has been implementing a broad restructuring programme aimed at strengthening governance and improving operational performance. The initiative forms part of a wider electricity sector reform launched by Togolese authorities last year amid growing financial and operational challenges.

According to official data, the utility's technical and commercial losses are estimated at nearly 16% annually, resulting in a revenue shortfall of around 30 billion CFA francs. The losses stem from weaknesses in the distribution network, billing deficiencies and recurring fraudulent practices, including illegal connections and meter tampering.

An experienced public-sector executive, Ayeva is expected to accelerate the reform agenda and help improve the reliability and quality of electricity supply.
