Lomé radiology congress pushes faster AI adoption in medical imaging

(Togo First) - Lomé hosted the fifth congress of the Togolese Society of Radiology and Medical Imaging (STRIM) last week, held alongside the fifth scientific conference of the Togolese-Beninese Society of Radiology and Medical Imaging (SBTRIM). The event brought together health professionals, researchers and students to discuss technological advances in the sector.

This year’s edition highlighted artificial intelligence and interventional radiology, two fields expected to reshape medical practice across West Africa.

The conference, themed “Medical Imaging in the Era of Innovation and Strengthening Technical Capacity,” focused on AI-assisted diagnostic tools, new biopsy techniques and minimally invasive treatments for conditions such as uterine fibroids and postpartum hemorrhage.

Specialists at the congress said artificial intelligence is becoming an essential tool for modernizing health systems. “Artificial intelligence will not replace humans. It will instead enhance diagnostic performance and help reduce errors,” said STRIM president Prof. Agoda-Koussema Lama Kègdigoma. Participants added that integrating these technologies would require investment in equipment, continuous training and ethical oversight.

Togo’s Minister of Higher Education and Research, Prof. Gado Tchangbédji, who attended the event, said the discussions were aligned with government efforts to modernize the health sector and strengthen local scientific expertise.

The meeting also helped deepen scientific cooperation between Togo and Benin, as AI adoption continues to grow in medical professions across West Africa.
