Benin's Romuald Wadagni expected in Lomé on Wednesday

(Togo First) - Benin's new president, Romuald Wadagni, is expected in Lomé on Wednesday as part of a regional tour that began on Monday, several media outlets reported. The stop in the Togolese capital is expected to be brief, in line with the itinerary planned across West Africa.

During the visit, Wadagni is expected to meet Togolese officials to discuss bilateral relations, trade and other areas of mutual interest. Benin and Togo share longstanding ties supported by formal cooperation agreements as well as extensive cross-border economic and social links.

The trip will be the first official visit to Togo by a Beninese president in several years. The last such visit took place in October 2017, when Patrice Talon traveled to Lomé for talks with Togolese President Faure Gnassingbé.

More broadly, the regional tour underscores the new administration's efforts to strengthen ties with neighboring countries through closer dialogue and cooperation, as West Africa grapples with persistent security, economic and political challenges.

According to official statements, Wadagni is on a diplomatic tour that will take him to several West African capitals. After meeting the leaders of Niger and Burkina Faso, the Beninese president is also expected in Accra and Abidjan for talks with the presidents of Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire.
