Lomé hosts review of AU-led mediation process for eastern DRC

(Togo First) - Lomé has hosted since Sunday the semi-annual review meeting on the African Union-led mediation process aimed at resolving the crisis in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the Great Lakes region. The meeting is assessing progress on the AU roadmap and reviewing developments on the ground.

The talks bring together the main actors involved in mediation efforts under AU auspices, including representatives of the East African Community (EAC), the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), as well as partners involved in the process.

With violence persisting in eastern DRC, participants are reviewing the guidelines adopted at the previous meeting, held in Lomé in January. Those guidelines are intended to harmonise African initiatives aimed at restoring peace and stability in the region.

Against this still-concerning backdrop, participants reaffirmed the need for coordinated action by regional states, the African Union and international partners to support stabilisation efforts. They said such coordination remains essential amid persistent insecurity and a resurgence of Ebola in parts of the DRC.

Among the members of the panel of facilitators present in Lomé are former Central African Republic President Catherine Samba-Panza and former Ethiopian President Sahle-Work Zewde. The two, who play a key role in efforts to build consensus among stakeholders and find a lasting solution to the crisis in eastern DRC, also reaffirmed their commitment to the principle of coherence and harmonisation championed by Togolese President Faure Gnassingbé, the AU-designated mediator, according to sources.
