Togo Tests National Crisis Response System

(Togo First) - Togo is stepping up its disaster preparedness efforts with a national emergency simulation exercise in Bas-Mono, one of the country's flood-prone areas.

In this context, the government launched the national multi-hazard simulation exercise "Mia Dzrado 2026" in Afagnan, in the Bas-Mono prefecture. The exercise is being organized by the National Civil Protection Agency (ANPC).

Running from June 8 to June 18, the exercise aims to assess the effectiveness of the national disaster management system and improve coordination among civil protection stakeholders.

The simulations cover several scenarios that could affect the country, including floods, displacement of communities, cholera outbreaks, traffic accidents, canoe capsizing incidents, fires, chemical spills and radiological incidents.

The exercise is designed to test the functioning of the National Emergency Operations Center as well as coordination mechanisms among emergency services, security forces, local authorities and humanitarian partners.

Bas-Mono was selected because the area is among those regularly exposed to flooding from the Mono River.

According to official data, floods are among the most recurrent natural disasters in Togo and regularly force people to leave their homes, while also causing agricultural losses and damage to infrastructure.

For public authorities, "Mia Dzrado 2026" is also intended to help strengthen community resilience and reduce the economic cost of disasters. The exercise is expected to identify weaknesses in the current system and improve response procedures before real crises occur.

The operation is accompanied by social initiatives for local populations, including free medical consultations, surgical procedures and campaigns to issue national identity cards.
