(Togo First) - Togo and the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC) signed an agreement in Lomé on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, as part of the implementation of the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM).
The document was signed by Transport Minister Komla Loukou-Kadjé and AFCAC Secretary General Adefunke Adeyemi on the sidelines of the African Air Transport Convention and Exhibition, which has been taking place in the Togolese capital since Monday, June 15, 2026.
The agreement is intended to strengthen Togo’s contribution to continental efforts to develop African air transport. It forms part of broader initiatives aimed at opening Africa’s skies and facilitating air links between countries across the continent.
As the African Union’s specialized institution responsible for harmonizing civil aviation policies and regulations across Africa, AFCAC supports member states in improving aviation safety and expanding intra-African air transport.
For Togo, the signing provides an additional means of enhancing its appeal as a regional aviation hub. The agreement is expected to encourage more African airlines to operate in Lomé, leading to increased passenger traffic and higher airport revenues.
That outlook aligns with the Togolese authorities’ ambition to establish Gnassingbé Eyadéma International Airport as a leading logistics and aviation hub in West Africa.
“We want Africa’s skies to be open and for all airlines to be able to operate freely across borders,” Minister Komla Loukou-Kadjé said.
Under the agreement, a roadmap accompanied by an action plan will be put in place to monitor commitments and assess progress. To that end, periodic ministerial meetings will be held to review the implementation of agreed measures and determine the next steps in the process.
Launched in 2018, the Single African Air Transport Market aims to liberalize air transport across the continent, improve connectivity among African states, and support economic development through more efficient and competitive air traffic.
