(Togo First) - The Togolese government said security forces seized and destroyed 50,729 kilograms of drugs and illicit substances in 2025, as the country marked the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on Thursday, June 26.
The figures were announced by Security and Civil Protection Minister Calixte Batossie Madjoulba as authorities reviewed the country's anti-drug operations. Of the total seized, 50,291 kg was cannabis, 51.77 kg cocaine, 8.5 kg methamphetamine and 377.78 kg illicit psychotropic substances, the government said.
“The results achieved in 2025 demonstrate the commitment and determination of our security services,” the minister said, adding that the seizures also reflect “a human reality” behind the figures.
The total is close to the volume destroyed in 2022, when more than 50 metric tons of drugs and illicit substances were incinerated as authorities continued efforts to dismantle trafficking networks. The authorities said the results come as criminal networks continue to adapt their methods.
“Togo, like many countries, has not been spared from this scourge. Its strategic location, its vibrant trade activity and its openness to the world are all factors that these criminal networks seek to exploit,” Madjoulba said.
Located on the Abidjan-Lagos corridor and home to a deep-water port, Togo is a major commercial transit hub in West Africa. This strategic position makes it more difficult to monitor illicit flows while increasing the need for stronger border surveillance and tighter controls at ports and logistics hubs. For several years, the authorities have received technical support and equipment from international partners to strengthen drug detection and analysis capabilities.
The minister also called for a collective effort to combat drug trafficking and drug use, stressing the role of families in prevention. He also reminded the public that the toll-free hotline 1014 remains available to report drug-related cases and support prevention efforts.
