Domestic Power Generation Covered More Than Half of Togo's Electricity Demand in 2024

(Togo First) - Togo met more than half of its electricity demand through domestic generation in 2024.

According to data from Togo’s Ministry of Energy, local sources supplied 53.3% of the electricity injected into the national grid, or 1,113.22 gigawatt-hours (GWh), out of a total of 2,087.96 GWh.

Thermal power plants accounted for the bulk of domestic electricity generation. The Lomé power plant, operated by Contour Global Togo SA, produced 47.7% of locally generated electricity, followed by Kékéli Efficient Power SA, with 39.5%.

The Blitta solar power plant, operated by AMEA Togo Solar, contributed 10.8%, while the Nangbéto hydropower dam accounted for 1.6%. CEET’s generating units provided the remaining 0.4%.

Electricity imports continued to play a major role in the country’s power supply.

They accounted for 46.7% of total electricity supply, or 974.74 GWh. Nigeria remained Togo’s largest external supplier, providing 59.3% of imported electricity through the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

Ghana supplied 40.5% of imports, with 39.8% coming through the Volta River Authority (VRA) and 0.7% through the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). Benin, through the Société Béninoise d’Énergie Électrique (SBEE), contributed the remaining 0.2%.

Total installed electricity generation capacity reached 327 megawatts (MW) at the end of 2024.

Renewables accounted for 41.24% of installed generation capacity, including 31.08% from solar photovoltaic power and 10.16% from hydropower. Despite their growing share of the country’s energy mix, solar facilities made only a limited contribution to electricity generation because of their intermittent nature.

Although 2025 data have not yet been released, domestic electricity generation could increase in the coming years, driven by the planned expansion of the Blitta solar power plant to 100 MW and the planned construction of power plants with capacities of 60 MW to 80 MW in Sokodé and Kara.
