(Togo First) - Togo's cotton sector is entering the 2026-2027 season with a production target of 105,000 tonnes of seed cotton from 105,000 hectares. To achieve this goal, regional growers' associations are being encouraged to expand cultivated areas and improve yields.
In Sokodé, during the general assembly of the Centrale Regional Cotton Growers Union (UR COTON Centrale) held last week, producers were encouraged to bring 9,000 hectares under cotton cultivation for an expected output of 9,000 tonnes of seed cotton. The target reflects the strong results achieved during the 2025-2026 season, during which the region recorded production of 5,083 tonnes, up nearly 40%, with an average yield of 1,115 kilograms per hectare.
In Grand Oti, producers also reviewed the results of the previous season. Despite a decline in planted area due to irregular rainfall, the region produced 7,581 tonnes of seed cotton from 7,728 hectares, with an average yield of 981 kilograms per hectare. Local officials expect improved farming practices to help raise yields above one tonne per hectare.
These regional targets come amid improving conditions for the sector. According to data from the New Cotton Company of Togo (NSCT), the 2025-2026 season is expected to end with production of nearly 80,000 tonnes of seed cotton, compared with 60,403 tonnes in the previous season, representing an increase of more than 20%. The Maritime region was also recently urged to raise production to 10,000 tonnes in upcoming seasons after harvesting 3,629 tonnes in 2024-2025.
Supported by the decision to keep the seed cotton purchase price at 300 CFA francs per kilogram, continued fertilizer subsidies and improved yields, the sector continues its recovery. Over the longer term, national targets call for production of between 150,000 and 200,000 tonnes by 2030.
