GTA Assurances Launches Comprehensive Insurance Package for Togolese Households

(Togo First) - GTA Assurances has launched a new comprehensive insurance package, "Pack Essentiel+," aimed at households in Togo.

The package combines home insurance, personal liability coverage, accident protection and death benefits under a single contract. It also includes 24/7 assistance, emergency cash advances and streamlined claims-processing procedures for certain types of claims.

"Pack Essentiel+" is clearly targeted at middle-income households that have little or no insurance coverage through individual policies.

GTA's strategy is based on combining several coverages into a single affordable package, an approach that has already been tested in other UEMOA markets to reduce the barrier created by the perceived cost of insurance.

Growing competition in bancassurance

The move comes amid growing competition in the bancassurance segment. In several UEMOA countries, banks and insurers are strengthening partnerships to reach customer groups that have had limited exposure to insurance and savings products. Backed by Banque Atlantique's network in Togo, GTA has access to a broader distribution channel.

The product's market success remains uncertain, however, in a country where insurance coverage levels remain low. The success of such initiatives also depends on the engagement of insurers, regulators and consumers, beyond simply making insurance contracts easier to understand.

The launch of the new insurance package by the Togolese subsidiary of Morocco's Banque Centrale Populaire (BCP), which has operated in Togo since 1973, comes at a time when insurance adoption remains limited. The sector's penetration rate stood at 1.56% of GDP in 2020. Another indicator of the challenge is that nearly 40% of vehicles operating in Togo are believed to be uninsured.

At the sector level, revenue in Togo's insurance market reached 68.77 billion CFA francs in 2020, up 10.8% from the previous year. In 2021, Togo recorded the highest life insurance penetration rate in the FANAF zone, at 0.78% of GDP, ahead of Côte d'Ivoire. That figure nevertheless remained below 1% of GDP, highlighting the sector's significant growth potential.
