Rwanda's Kagame Arrives in Lomé for Cooperation, Security Talks

(Togo First) - Rwandan President Paul Kagame is expected in Lomé on Monday, June 15, 2026, for an official working visit. The trip comes as Togo and Rwanda seek to strengthen bilateral ties and coincides with the 2026 African Air Transport Convention and Exhibition, currently underway in the Togolese capital.

During his stay, Kagame will hold talks with Togo’s President of the Council, Faure Gnassingbé, on topics including bilateral cooperation and peace and security in the Great Lakes region.

The visit comes against the backdrop of Togo’s involvement in mediation efforts related to the crisis in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The two leaders previously met in Kigali during diplomatic consultations led by Faure Gnassingbé as part of efforts to promote stability in the Great Lakes region.

The two countries have also maintained close cooperation for several years across a range of sectors, including transport, trade and services.

In the aviation sector, Togo and Rwanda have been linked since 2018 by an agreement liberalizing air services. The deal allows RwandAir and Lomé-based ASKY Airlines to operate direct flights between the two capitals without restrictions on flight frequencies, in line with the objectives of the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM).
