Togo, Mauritania Discuss Regional and International Issues

(Togo First) - Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, President of the Council of Ministers, last week received Mauritanian Foreign Minister Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, who delivered a message from President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani.

The meeting provided an opportunity for the two sides to review bilateral relations and discuss a range of regional and international issues, according to a statement from the Presidency.

According to Mauritania's foreign minister, the talks focused in particular on issues under discussion within the African Union (AU), the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the United Nations.

The two countries also reaffirmed their shared positions on several matters of mutual interest. In West Africa, Mauritania serves as a bridge between the Maghreb, the Sahel and West Africa.

Although the country withdrew from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in 2000, it remains an important partner for West African economies through its Atlantic coastline, abundant mineral resources, growing natural gas sector and role in trade corridors linking North Africa with sub-Saharan Africa.

Amid a changing geopolitical landscape in the Sahel, Nouakchott is seeking to strengthen its role as a stabilizing force, while maintaining active engagement with regional institutions, international partners and neighboring countries.
