(Togo First) - Cement producer CIMTOGO has launched a new phase of its industrial development in Togo. The Togolese subsidiary of Heidelberg Materials officially rebranded its “Super Rapide” cement as ECOCIM during a launch event in Lomé on Tuesday, June 30, as part of a strategy to reduce the environmental footprint of its products.
The company said the change is more than a rebranding and reflects its commitment to more sustainable construction at a time when the building materials industry is under growing pressure to balance technical performance with climate goals.
Super Rapide Rebranded as ECOCIM
Hervé Azoupia, CIMTOGO’s commercial director, said ECOCIM is an upgraded version of Super Rapide that retains the same quality, strength and performance while producing lower carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions.
The 32.5 N cement, sold in 50-kilogram bags, keeps the same technical characteristics as its predecessor but is designed to better meet environmental requirements through a lower carbon footprint, he said.
The lower emissions result in part from a revised cement formulation. According to Azoupia, ECOCIM contains a lower proportion of clinker, the main component of cement and the largest source of carbon dioxide emissions during cement production, and a higher share of mineral components such as limestone. He said the new formulation reduces the product’s carbon footprint while maintaining its technical performance.
Industry Shifts Toward Lower-Carbon Cement
For CIMTOGO, the transition reflects a broader shift across the building materials industry. As governments tighten decarbonization targets and sustainable development policies gain momentum, cement producers are increasingly developing lower-carbon products without compromising quality or performance.
The company also said the new cement complies with Togolese Standard TGN 002, which sets the technical specifications for cement sold in the country. The launch was attended by Essot’na Héyou Bodjona, director general of the Togolese Agency for Standardization (ATN), who confirmed that ECOCIM meets the national standard.
CIMTOGO Chief Executive Officer Ebenezer Somuah said the launch of ECOCIM marked a new stage in the company’s adoption of national quality standards. He added that the cement complies with Togolese Standard TGN 002 while offering a lower carbon footprint. Somuah also said the product responds to the growing challenge of climate change, pointing to the heavy rainfall that had affected much of the sub-region over the previous 48 hours. He said CIMTOGO was proud to introduce a cement that meets both national quality standards and environmental objectives.
With ECOCIM, CIMTOGO joins a growing number of international cement producers working to reduce emissions from cement manufacturing, one of the world’s most carbon-intensive industries. The company aims to balance competitiveness, regulatory compliance and decarbonization as demand for construction materials continues to grow in Togo and across the sub-region.
