Togo commissions new mother-and-child hospital in Amou-Oblo

(Togo First) - A mother-and-child hospital in Amou-Oblo, in the Amou 2 commune of Togo’s Plateaux region, has been officially opened and handed over to Health Minister Jean-Marie Tessi in the presence of local mayor Meyebine-Esso Gnassingbé.

Similar facilities have already been established in the Golfe 1 commune in Bè and in Est-Mono 1 commune in Elavagnon. Equipped with modern medical equipment, the hospital is intended to strengthen maternal, pediatric and neonatal care as part of efforts to reduce maternal and infant mortality.

Built on a 7,090-square-meter site, including 2,170 square meters of built-up area, the facility has a capacity of 51 beds. It also includes two fully equipped operating theaters designed to handle complex cases at the regional level. The hospital provides services covering maternal and child healthcare, including gynecology, obstetrics and pediatric surgery.

Its intensive care services include neonatology, resuscitation and an emergency unit. The facility also has imaging and laboratory services aimed at improving diagnosis and patient monitoring. For local authorities, the hospital represents more than a healthcare facility.

This is more than just a building with beds and equipment. It is a concrete and lasting response to the needs of the population,” the mayor said, adding that the center would provide safer conditions for mothers and newborns.

Giving birth should no longer put women’s lives at risk, and children should no longer face a struggle for survival,” he added.

According to the Health Ministry, the opening of the hospital reflects the government’s efforts to strengthen maternal and child healthcare. The project forms part of a broader policy to modernize the healthcare system and improve access to quality medical services, particularly in underserved areas.
