Togo, Ghana Customs Enhance Cooperation Against Smuggling

(Togo First) - Togo and Ghana are moving to deepen customs cooperation to combat smuggling and strengthen trade security along the Lomé-Accra corridor. Senior customs officials from both countries met last week in Accra for high-level talks focused on trade security and regional integration.

Discussions centered on establishing joint border operations, particularly at the Aflao-Kodjoviakopé crossing. The proposed framework would include coordinated patrols, real-time information sharing and interconnection between Togo's SYDAM and Ghana's ICUMS customs systems.

For Lomé, the stakes include reducing revenue losses from cross-border trafficking while improving the flow of goods along a corridor that is strategic to regional trade.

Customs officials said fraud networks continue to exploit operational differences between the two countries. "If Togo sneezes, Ghana catches a cold. If Ghana blocks one road, smugglers go through Togo," Ghana's Customs Commissioner Aaron Kanor said at the close of the talks.

Both administrations also said they want to accelerate customs procedures to make the Ghana-Togo corridor more attractive to carriers and business operators across the sub-region.
