Togo launches intercommunal framework for forest restoration under AFR100

(Togo First) - An intercommunal consultation framework dedicated to forest landscape restoration is now operational in Togo as part of the AFR100 Togo project. Bringing together mayors, municipal secretaries-general, traditional chiefs and technical staff from the Ministry of Environment, the body held a working session this week in Kpalimé to discuss the project's key priorities.

The framework is designed to strengthen coordination among municipalities on the sustainable management of natural resources. During the meeting, local authorities addressed a range of issues, including forest landscape restoration, climate change adaptation and sustainable territorial governance.

Implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and funded by German development cooperation (BMZ), the AFR100 Togo project targets the restoration of forest areas under improved management, as well as degraded lands. Its success, according to FAO Representative in Togo Oyétoundé Djiwa, hinges on the meaningful involvement of local authorities in the planning and coordination of environmental interventions.

"Mayors are now essential actors in local development and the sustainable management of natural resources. Landscape restoration can only be effective if it is driven collectively, through an intercommunal approach," he said.

At the continental level, the AFR100 African initiative aims to restore 100 million hectares of degraded land across the continent by 2030. Within that framework, Togo has committed to restoring 1.4 million hectares.
