Togo receives Saudi military support for counterterrorism efforts

(Togo First) - The Togolese government on Tuesday received a batch of military equipment donated by the Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition (IMCTC), an organization founded in 2015 at Saudi Arabia's initiative.

The equipment includes combat helmets, tactical vests, deployment bags, protective plates and other gear intended for specialized counterterrorism units.

These items send a strong message of solidarity, brotherhood and shared responsibility in the face of a common threat,” Security Minister Calixte Batossie Madjoulba said. He added that the cooperation formed part of broader efforts to strengthen operational capabilities and improve the preparedness of security forces.

The Saudi delegation, led by IMCTC Secretary General Mohammed Al-Moghidi, also discussed possible support in training, intelligence and skills development.

Togo joined the coalition in 2022. For several years, the West African coastal nation has faced growing security pressure in the Savanes region, which borders Burkina Faso, where jihadist groups linked to Islamic State and al Qaeda have expanded their operations.

The worsening security situation in the Sahel has pushed several West African coastal states, including Togo, Benin and Ghana, to strengthen military capabilities and international partnerships.
