U.N. System in Togo Tallies 2 Million Beneficiaries in 2024-2025

(Togo First) - The United Nations system in Togo said it reached more than 2 million people between 2024 and 2025 through programs in nutrition, health, education, social protection and food systems, representing nearly a quarter of the country's population.

The figures were presented on Monday in Lomé by Coumba Dieng Sow, the U.N. resident coordinator in Togo, at the opening of a regional conference on nutrition and early childhood development in West and Central Africa, organized jointly with the World Bank Group.

Focus on Northern Togo

In northern Togo, particularly in the Savanes region, which faces security challenges and population displacement, more than 500,000 people, including refugees and internally displaced persons, received support aimed at helping them cope with insecurity and displacement, Sow said.

The interventions included cash transfers, support for agricultural producers, school feeding programs, nutritional supplementation and community support initiatives.

Solutions exist, including cash transfers, support for farmers, improved access to nutritious foods, supplementation and fortification, school feeding programs, and support for local producers,” Sow said.

The U.N.’s work in Togo is carried out through several agencies, including the World Food Programme, UNICEF, the Food and Agriculture Organization, the U.N. Development Programme and the World Health Organization.

The U.N.’s 2023-2026 partnership framework with the Togolese government focuses on human capital development, social protection and support for vulnerable regions.

Sow said nutrition was “one of the most underestimated economic policies of our time,” highlighting the link between malnutrition, productivity and economic growth.
