Togo begins rollout of local urban development plans in 13 municipalities

(Togo First) - Thirteen Togolese municipalities validated their Local Urban Development Plans (PLU) last week, adopting a strategic planning tool under the national urban development and land security program in which they are participating as pilot communes.

Based on an assessment of local conditions, each PLU defines development guidelines, action programs, implementation mechanisms and applicable urban planning regulations. Authorities expect the plans to help organize urban space more effectively, prevent land disputes and promote balanced local development.

Beyond planning development initiatives, the instrument is intended to guide the future growth of the municipalities concerned. It is also expected to improve living conditions, promote efficient land use and strengthen the capacity of local authorities to manage local development projects.

The program is led by the Ministry of Territorial Planning and Urban Development through the General Directorate of Urban Planning and Housing. In its pilot phase, it covers the communes of Vo 2, Amou 2, Tchamba 1, Zio 3, Dankpen 1, Blitta 1, Kozah 2, Oti-Sud 1, Haho 1, Mo 2, Tchaoudjo 2, Est-Mono 1 and Agou 1.

According to the General Directorate of Urban Planning and Housing, the initiative forms part of efforts to promote well-managed, sustainable and inclusive urban development.

“It is the result of urban and land reforms undertaken to sustainably improve living conditions,” the agency said.
