Togo completes 14 groynes under coastal protection project

(Togo First) - By the end of April 2026, 14 of the 22 planned groynes had been completed along the Gbodjomé-Agbodrafo-Goumoukopé section, a seven-kilometer stretch of Togo’s coastline.

Work began on Oct. 29, 2025, under the regional WACA ResIP program and is being carried out by Dutch firm Boskalis under the supervision of engineering consultancy INROS LACKNER. The structures, measuring between 60 and 75 meters, are intended to curb coastal erosion affecting part of Togo’s shoreline.

Project officials said work is also advancing on other technical components. Eight sections have already been replenished with sand dredged offshore using a dedicated maritime pumping system. Filling operations on lagoon channels in Aného are continuing in parallel.

Authorities said several preparatory works have been completed since the project began, including the construction of access roads, storage areas for riprap materials and the marking out of construction zones for heavy equipment.

The project also includes a social component through the implementation of a Resettlement Action Plan for affected communities. Awareness campaigns are being conducted in nearby communities.

Financed by the World Bank and the French Development Agency, the WACA program, which is due to end this year, aims to strengthen the resilience of West African coastal areas against erosion and the effects of climate change.
