Togo Hosts West African Peasant Seed Fair Through Dec. 11

(Togo First) - The West African Peasant Seed Fair (FIASP/COASP) is being held in Niamtougou, northern Togo, until Thursday, Dec. 11, 2025. Niamtougou lies about 439 km north of the capital, Lomé.

The event has drawn agricultural participants from 30 African countries, along with delegations from Europe, Asia and the Americas. The gathering positions Togo as a center of regional discussions on agroecology and seed sovereignty.

Held at the International Center for Agropastoral Development in Baga (CIDAP), the fair focuses on preserving traditional seeds amid soil degradation, climate variability and biodiversity loss. Participants are sharing knowledge on farmer-led selection methods, resilient farming practices and ways to strengthen local value chains.

Before the opening, a peasant seed house was opened in Lassa Elimdè, in the Kozah 1 municipality. The facility aims to ensure reliable local vegetable seed production and reduce dependence on imports, a strategic priority for Togolese farmers. According to the National Federation of Market Gardeners of Togo, it helps meet ongoing needs for access to suitable seeds.

The fair features workshops, training sessions and visits to agroecological farms. Organizers say they also want to strengthen collaboration between farmers, researchers and policymakers, building on a scientific meeting held last week at the University of Lomé.

Launched in 2011 in Djimini, Senegal, by a sub-regional agroecology network and farmer organizations, the West African Peasant Seed Fair has since become an annual platform bringing together farmers, researchers and biodiversity advocates to promote peasant seeds, encourage seed exchange and defend seed sovereignty in West Africa.
