Togo Launches Nationwide Free Cataract Surgery Campaign

(Togo First) - Togo's National Eye Health Program (PNSO) launched a nationwide free cataract surgery campaign on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, in partnership with the humanitarian organization Direct Aid Togo.

The initiative aims to screen and provide cataract surgery to nearly 4,000 people across the country's five regions and the Autonomous District of Greater Lomé (DAGL).

The program targets 1,100 beneficiaries in the Plateaux region, 850 in the Central region, 850 in Kara, 800 in the Savanes region, and 400 in Greater Lomé.

Beyond its medical impact, the campaign seeks to address a broader economic and social challenge. According to the 2024 national Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness (RAAB) survey, nearly 40.8% of people aged 50 and older live with bilateral visual impairment. Cataracts account for more than 60% of blindness cases recorded in the country.

PNSO data also show that an estimated 60,000 eyes affected by cataracts still require surgery in Togo. This backlog reduces the independence of those affected and limits their participation in economic and social life.

The campaign will be implemented in two phases nationwide. Activities have already begun in the Plateaux region and will gradually expand to other participating health centers selected under the program.
