Togo: Waste Management Project, GEDEC, Enters Operational Phase

(Togo First) - Togo launched its Waste Management and Decentralization in Regional Capitals (GEDEC) project on May 22 in Kara. Officials adopted the Politique Communale d'Assainissement for the Kozah 1 commune, marking a major step in modernizing public waste management and promoting healthier environments in key towns.

The sanitation policy for Kozah 1 targets insalubrity with clear actions. It improves pre-collection waste services, involves local communities, and upgrades waste treatment infrastructure to ensure long-term sustainability.

While Kozah 1 is the pilot municipality, the program will be expanded to four other major towns—Zio 1, Ogou 1, Tchaoudjo 1, and Tône 1.

The European Union (EU) has backed the GEDEC with €4.2 million, about CFA2.7 billion, while Expertise France provides technical support. The project could benefit over 750,000 people across the five target municipalities.

The GEDEC builds on progress made by the Togo Water and Sanitation Project (PEAT), which has operated in several localities in recent years.
