Togo and Niger municipal bodies sign decentralized cooperation agreement

(Togo First) - Togo’s umbrella body for municipalities, the Faîtière des communes du Togo (FCT), and the Association des municipalités du Niger (AMN) launched a municipal cooperation partnership in Lome on Tuesday, signing a memorandum of understanding to formalize the initiative.

The agreement was signed by FCT President Koubounou Touni and AMN President Boubacar Soumana Garanké. It aims to strengthen ties between municipalities in the two countries in areas including local governance, modernization of public administration, regional development, municipal services and the green transition.

The partnership also seeks to promote entrepreneurship and local economic development through exchanges of best practices, joint projects and twinning initiatives.

Beyond socioeconomic cooperation, the agreement could support efforts to strengthen local resilience. Niger faces major security challenges in several regions, and the partnership may encourage exchanges on early warning systems, social cohesion and the prevention of radicalization. Similar concerns have emerged in northern Togo.

The FCT is already involved in similar regional initiatives, notably through a partnership with Benin’s Association nationale des communes du Bénin (ANCB).
